Tourism
In the
past
three
years
the
government
spent
RD$1.6
billion
on
tourism
infrastructure
and from
August
2004 to
July
2007,
the
Ministry
of
Tourism
invested
US$60,640,000
on
advertising
abroad.
Travel
to the
Dominican
Republic
has
doubled
since
1996, up
from
1,925,565
tourists
in 1996
to
3,965,055
in 2006,
according
to
statistics
the
Ministry
of
Tourism
has at
hand.
The
first
quarter
of 2007
saw 1.2
million
tourists.
Canadians
make up
28.5
percent
of
tourists;
Americans
28
percent
of
tourists;
and
Europeans
31
percent
of
tourists.
A
strengthening
Canadian
dollar
and
economy
is
boosting
Canadian
travel.
Canadian
travel
increased
from
427,074
travelers
to the
Dominican
Republic
in 2005
to
509,323
for
2006.
Better
yet, the
first
six
months
of the
year are
showing
395,612
arrivals,
compared
to
286,975
for
January
to June
2006,
representing
a
significant
increase
of 37%.
The
number
of hotel
rooms in
the
Dominican
Republic
has
increased
from
36,273
in 1996
to
63,206
in 2006,
representing
a 31.5%
increase.
According
to the
Ministry
of
Tourism,
3,025
new
hotel
rooms
could be
on the
market
in 2007,
opening
on the
north
and east
coasts.
This
would
bring
the
projected
new
total to
almost
70,000
rooms,
maintaining
the
destination's
leadership
in the
Caribbean,
outside
of
Mexico.
The new
rooms
are
under
construction
in
Puerto
Plata,
Las
Terrenas
(Samana),
Bavaro,
Punta
Cana,
Bayahibe
(La
Altagracia)
and in
San
Pedro de
Macoris
(Juan
Dolio
and
Guayacanes).
The
Dominican
Republic
also is
revving
up for
the
start of
major
luxury
resort
development,
on the
tails of
the many
successful
second
home
vacation
communities.
Four
Seasons
announced
it is
ready to
start
building
in Casa
de Campo
in La
Romana.
Ritz
Carlton
is on
the
books
for
construction
in Cap
Cana, in
Punta
Cana;
Fairmont
of
Canada
has
plans
for Roco
Ki
resort
development
in
Macao,
north of
Punta
Cana;
and
Westin
is
building
a first
hotel in
Roco Ki.
